MEET THE SQUAD: An Interview With Shanna Tyler

An interview with Shanna Tyler

...on loving herself, nurturing her soul, and living her sport

an interview with yoga instructor shanna tyler on loving herself, nurturing her soul, and living her sport in new york city

As a yoga instructor, podcast host, community builder, care coordinator, and native New Yorker, Shanna does it all. In everything she does, Shanna is sure to exude self-love, compassion, and a "just go for it" mentality. Whether it's through her no-BS Instagram posts or really real podcast chats, Shanna knows a thing or two about showing up and owning it....and she's just getting started.

I wanted to check-in with Shanna and see how she stays so motivated, what the social media community means to her, and how yoga has played a part in her jam packed lifestyle. I'm so excited to have her on TWR as my March guest in a monthly series I call Meet the SQUAD. I know you will enjoy her real vibes and infectious smile as much as me!

1. So tell us, who is Shanna Tyler?

I’m a NYC based care coordinator, yoga teacher, Athleta brand ambassador, and founder Self Soul Sport (a kick-ass group of women!). When I’m not busy doing those things, I can be found in a SoulCycle or a yoga studio somewhere sweating it out. Or if I’m not those places, I’m in my room hovering over my laptop!

2. What would your ideal day look like?

My ideal day is not the ideal (haha). I’m usually waking up early for a class, or if not, I’m hitting the snooze. I wake up and go to my full-time job, then go off to another class or a networking event or out with a friend. Get home in time to make myself dinner then repeat! But everyday looks different and is an adventure!

3. Being in the wellness industry, how has social media impacted your business?

Social media is my business. In the wellness industry, it is so engrained and expected to be active on social media. I love social media and believe it can be used as a tool for good or bad. I tend to use it for good!

4. Your blog focuses on “loving ourselves, nurturing our souls, and living our sports.” Can you describe what that means to you?

I love talking about Self Soul Sport. It is a lifestyle that I began to adopt and aspire to every single day. Then I decided to expand it to a community of women who focus on these three pillars themselves. It means being able to say nice things to ourselves, it means taking care of ourselves, it means moving our bodies in the way it likes. It looks so different to us all but it unites us all at the same time.

5. What advice would you give to someone looking to start practicing yoga, but may be too intimidated to give it a try?

Just do it. Do it in your room with YouTube. Do it in a local yoga class. Intimidation is fear and fear will keep us from experiencing all that life has to offer. Yoga is a practice that can be adopted by any person at any time regardless of size, age, weight, height, sexual orientation, gender, etc. Have fun with it and feel that freedom in knowing it’s for you, just the way you are!

6. How do you stay fueled throughout your day?

I fuel by talking to myself in the morning and saying nice things. If I need to hear that I’m beautiful, I’ll say it. If I need to hear that I’m strong, I’ll say it. Positive affirmations are a large part of my day. I also fuel myself by sharing who I am with others. It gives me joy when others have joy. If I can share a smile and someone smiles back, my day is officially made.

7. You’ve got some serious goals set for yourself. What’s in store for Shanna Tyler in the coming year?

It’s funny to hear that coming from you, Cass. You are goals! And there’s so much in store. You have to wait and see :)

8. The most motivating advice you’ve ever received?

I cannot pinpoint one bit of advice because I have so many people impart such great words and advice to me! But I can say that the most motivating words I’ve been hearing lately is that I’m capable of more than I know. It’s nuts to think that I can do more than what I’m doing now.

9. If you had to choose between a SoulCycle membership for a year or free Chipotle for life, what would you choose?

SoulCycle for life. I know that wasn’t an option, but I’ll negotiate it.

10. What does the phrase “girl, get after it” mean to you?

It means, “do you, boo boo.” It means you got this. No matter what! What your heart wants, go for it. What your soul wants, go for it. What your body wants, go for it (but be safe hehe).

11. Where can we find you?

I’m all over the Instaland @shannatyler_ and my community page is @selfsoulsport
My website is shannatyler.com
