How to Write a Killer Instagram Bio
The Blog Squad is back! This time we're talking all things Instagram, specifically how to write a killer Instagram bio that can gain you the followers of your dreams.
Your Instagram Bio is everything.
Think about it. Your bio is one of the first things people see on Instagram. It can give people a sense of who you are without knowing anything about you. And, it’s the very first moment when people decide if they want to follow you or not.
So unless your Kim K or Oprah (click to find out just what I mean), your bio can make or break your Instagram game.
Why your Instagram Bio is so important
A lot of social media clients that I work with come to me with issues such as struggling with their engagement, figuring out what to post and when, and how to convert followers into clients. All of these things are very important problems to address, but that’s not what our first or (sometimes) second session even entails.

I always start out a social media strategy session by analyzing your “base”, a.k.a. what followers see first. And, most often times, that’s your Instagram bio.
Your bio should give people a sense of who you are, it should be readable, and it should be clear just why people should follow you.
So how do you write a Killer Instagram Bio?
In order to jumpstart your Instagram efforts, I’m going to give you the exact process I walk my clients through when it comes to writing a great Instagram bio. I’ve also included some examples of accounts that I believe do a great job in writing their Instagram bio.
Follow the steps below and you’ll be well on your way to Insta-fame.
1. Who are you?
First, you have to start with giving people a sense of who you are. What are some words used to describe your style on Instagram? What do you love? What do you not really love? What do you post about? Give people a taste of what it would be like to follow you.
Example: @nutritionwithchelsea “lyme | gut health | gluten-free eats”
2. What do you do?
This should be fairly simple, and a lot of times it includes your tagline (if you have one). Are you a personal trainer? A designer? Calligrapher? This is your chance to tell people exactly what you do!
Example: @garagemt “Providing online workouts for $15/month while giving back to non-profits”
3. Why should people follow you?
This one is a bit tricky. It’s not necessarily something that has to be written out, but rather felt within your bio. Are you funny? Carefree? Bold? The way you write your bio can give people a certain vibe, and this vibe is what people use as a deciding factor.
Example: @johanna.seier “LOVE X TRAINING X REAL SHIT”
4. Call To Action
This is your chance to keep people on your page and give them more. By using a call to action, such as “join today” or “read the latest blog” you can instantly provide further value to your followers.
Example: @camillesansouci “Find your fit”
Some things to keep in mind:
- Instagram only allows 150 characters…choose wisely
- Make your bio readable. I recommend adding in line-breaks. You can’t do this in the actual app, but you can type your bio in a note with the line-breaks. Then, copy and paste this note into your bio. Viola!
A lot of people overlook their Instagram bio, especially those wanting to grow it as a business. By following these simple steps, you can write a killer Instagram bio - turning visitors into followers and followers into clients. It’s time to up your Instagram game!
